Back to School: How CASAs Help Children Thrive in the Classroom
Some back-to-school essentials aren’t found in stores. They’re found in compassionate community members who care deeply about the well-being and safety of children. Here, we call them Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).
For many, back-to-school is an exciting season – a new beginning, a chance to reconnect with old friends and make new ones, and a coming of age as students start a new grade level. However, for children in the child welfare system, returning to school can be daunting. It can add another layer of stress to what’s already going on in their life. Those who lack stability, security, and resources at home often face greater challenges than their school peers. It’s no surprise that what happens at home can often carry into the classroom.
At Fairfax CASA, we witness firsthand the transformation that comes with having a reliable adult in your corner. The kind of support that can be especially helpful when children are in school. As children head back to school, our volunteers are prepared to provide the advocacy they need to thrive.
Advocating for Services
As a dedicated set of eyes and ears, our volunteers identify areas where children may be struggling and need additional support. In some cases, this has led to the discovery of long-overlooked learning disabilities among children in our program. When these needs are identified, our CASA volunteers persistently advocate for children to receive the support and services they need for a fair, equitable chance to succeed in school. Our CASAs help ensure children receive the education resources and accommodations they need, including Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) when appropriate.
Reliable Support System
Children in the child welfare system often don’t have a reliable support system at home. That can make navigating the challenges of school more difficult and, at times, discouraging. Having one consistent adult to offer encouragement, celebrate their progress, and remind them that someone believes in them can go a long way. In fact, youth in the child welfare system who have a CASA are more likely to graduate than those without one.
Our CASA volunteers show up when it matters most and celebrate victories, big and small. They help children feel cared for, supported, and empowered to succeed in school.

While we can’t always change what happens at home or what the future holds, we can provide the consistency, encouragement, and advocacy children need to navigate a difficult time.
