Justin’s Story

Justin* was only seven years old when the court issued a Preliminary Protection Order (PPO) after being sexually abused by his grandfather. At the time, he lived with both his grandparents, who were also his primary caretakers. With the PPO in place, his grandfather was no longer allowed to have any contact with Justin and had to move out of the family home. Justin remained under his grandmother’s care. She complied with the court orders, maintaining no contact between Justin and his grandfather.

During this time, Justin’s CASA visited him regularly, building a strong, trusting relationship with each visit. His CASA became a reliable support system for Justin, encouraging him to read and focus on his studies. Throughout the school year, his teacher reported gradual improvements in his grades. The CASA advocated for court-ordered services to be put in place and coordinated monthly check-ins with the Department of Family Services (DFS) specialist to monitor Justin’s progress.

After 18 months of complying with the PPO, Justin’s case officially closed. But before it did, Justin wrote a letter to his CASA expressing his deepest gratitude for their involvement and support.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. You’ve changed my life and we had so much fun. I love baking with you and going out with you and talk to you about everything. I’m gonna miss you and miss every conversation with you and baking and even going out with you but the memories I will remember. You are a special person to me.”  

Children in the child welfare system thrive when they have a consistent, reliable adult in their life. For Justin, his CASA became a staple support system he could count on for support, encouragement, and someone who advocated solely for his best interests.
