What do volunteers do?

Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA volunteers, advocate for the best interests of an abused or neglected child who is under the protection of the Fairfax Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Volunteers visit the children on their cases twice a month and interview social workers, therapists, teachers, and other professionals, gathering information to report back to court. Volunteers receive extensive training and are supervised by a professional staff.

CASA volunteers search for information by reviewing records and conducting interviews with parents, teachers, doctors, therapists, and service providers. Most importantly, CASA volunteers get to know each child and make sure the child is safe.

Is CASA volunteering right for you?

CASA volunteering is a great fit for empty nesters, retirees, and anyone with the ability to make a long-term commitment to improving the life of an abused or neglected child. All Fairfax Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers agree to remain on their assigned cases until they are closed by the court: cases may last anywhere from a few months to a few years.

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services regulates the Fairfax CASA program and requires that volunteers meet the following qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to prepare court reports and to provide testimony.
  • Must possess mature judgment, a high degree of responsibility and sufficient time to assist in advocating for the best interests of the child.
  • Must be able to relate to persons of different cultures, ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic status.
