Success Story: Amiri’s Reunification

Background
Last August, five-month old Amiri’s* life changed dramatically. After the discovery of Amiri’s unexplained physical injuries and fractures, Child Protective Services (CPS) became involved, and the court issued a Child Protective Order (CPO).
The court ordered Amiri’s father to vacate the family home, which left Amiri in her mother’s care. Her mother found herself navigating the challenges of balancing single parenthood and the involvement of child welfare.
Parents’ Commitment Overcomes All
Despite these obstacles, Amiri’s mother showed resilience and strength. She remained committed to maintaining a safe and stable home for Amiri. She fully cooperated with the court and embraced all services offered.
Meanwhile, Amiri’s father was provided an opportunity to work towards reunification. He committed himself to the process. He underwent a psychological evaluation, completed a parenting course, individual therapy and other services mandated by the court.
Throughout it all, the CASA stood firmly by Amiri’s side. From gathering documents from various providers to making mandatory visits twice a month, the CASA kept Amiri’s best interest at the forefront of every recommendation made to the court.
Reunification
After substantial progress, the court permitted Amiri’s father to return home under the condition that all contact with Amiri would be supervised. The family continued to engage with services, including family therapy, which provided a safe space for healing, communication, and rebuilding trust.
Over the following months, the family demonstrated steady growth, accountability, and full cooperation with the court. There were no further safety concerns. The supervised contact went well. The therapeutic environment helped both parents improve their communication. It provided them with effective co-parenting strategies, centered around Amiri’s safety and emotional needs.
After nearly a year, the case was successfully dissolved. There were no more mandated services, no more supervised contact, and no further oversight by the court.
Advocacy Matters
We are so happy for Amiri’s family reunion. This successful and wonderful ending was made possible through the parents’ hard work and commitment, along with the CASA’s constant advocacy for Amiri. We wish Amiri and her family the very best and a hopeful and secure future together.
