David’s Story

David* was an infant when he entered the child welfare system for the first time. He was born substance-exposed and was later reunited with his mother after she achieved sobriety and completed court-ordered requirements.

Six years later, David was removed from his mother’s care again due to grave concerns about his safety and well-being. His mother frequently used heroin and other substances while David was in the home. She left syringes, needles, and other dangerous items within his reach. Additionally, at six years old, David was nonverbal and still in diapers. He had not received any therapeutic services or resources to address his complex needs.

While in foster care, David attended frequent supervised visits with his mother, biological father, and his mother’s paramour. However, his mother’s involvement gradually declined over time. Eventually, petitions to terminate parental rights were filed for all parents involved.

CASA By His Side

Throughout the case, David’s CASA became an integral part of his healing journey. The CASA was steadfast and persistent in ensuring David received the help and services he needed. David’s CASA advocated for speech therapy and other behavioral therapeutic services. Additionally, the CASA worked with licensed behavioral therapists to ensure David received support during and after school.

The CASA also attended back-to-back parent visits to get a better understanding of how the adults interacted and connected with David. During the case, the CASA dedicated 338 hours, drove 3,465 miles, visited David 55 times, and made 497 contacts with providers and professionals involved in the case.

New Beginnings

Though David could not be reunited with his family, he was adopted by his foster family. He is now safe, stable, and thriving in his new environment. He has made significate strides. David communicates with ease and gets along with his adoptive siblings and parents. He has also learned new coping strategies to help manage his emotional outbursts.

David is active in sports and enjoys spending time with his peers. His teachers have reported that he is performing well academically and has made major behavioral improvements.

We couldn’t be happier for David and the progress he has made. We wish him and his adoptive family all the best as they continue this new chapter together.
