Congratulations to Our CASA Spring Training Graduates!

Spring Class Graduates

Hope is what carries us through trying times. It’s what children in the child welfare system cling to as they navigate a long and unfamiliar journey. At our spring training ceremony, The Honorable Thomas P. Sotelo emphasized the science of hope and how it serves as the cornerstone of our mission and work.

On May 28, 2025, fifteen dedicated new Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)—including our newest Supervisor, Kirsten Hauser, and Communications Specialist, Jocelyn Sorto Futterer—took an oath to serve and advocate for the abused and neglected children in the Fairfax County Court system.

These newly appointed advocates completed 35 hours of comprehensive training covering twenty-four essential topics. From court report writing and domestic violence to understanding cultural biases, each trainee was equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in their new role.

We were also privileged to welcome guests speakers from the Department of Social Services and attorneys who serve the Fairfax County Court. They shared insights about their work and the critical role a CASA plays in a child’s case.

Our advocates fully immersed themselves in the training—gaining valuable, hands-on experience that mirrors the real responsibilities they will soon take on as advocates. Throughout the two weeks, trainees followed a case study, attended a court hearing, and ended their training with a  written court report.

The work of a CASA is vital and truly makes a difference in our communities. In times of darkness and uncertainty, it may feel as if one person isn’t enough to make an impact. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. YOU be the one to change a child’s story for the better. Take the first step by attending an upcoming virtual information session.
