Felix’s Success Story

Felix’s Success Story: A Story of Hope and Resilience
At 10 years old, Felix* entered the child welfare system after being sexually abused, neglected, and physically abused. Due to the abuse and ongoing safety concerns, the Department of Family Services (DFS) removed Felix from his home and placed him into foster care.
While in care, Felix struggled with serious mental health and behavioral challenges. He experienced recurring violent outbursts. As a result, his first placement disrupted, and he moved between a succession of foster homes.
The Impact of CASA
Despite the frequent changes, one thing remained consistent: his CASA. His CASA became a constant, reliable presence in Felix’s life. Even after he moved to a Residential Treatment Center six hours away, his CASA still showed up.
His CASA also advocated for Felix’s brothers while they were in care. Gradually, his CASA built a solid relationship with everyone involved in Felix’s life, and earned the family’s trust, making engagement easier. Soon, Felix’s CASA became both Felix and his brothers’ go-to person.
A Mother’s Commitment
In the meantime, Felix’s mother worked diligently toward reunification. She completed the court-ordered services including a psychological evaluation, parent/child assessment, and individual and family therapy. There was a clear bond between the mother and her children, and her boys wanted nothing more than to be reunited with her.
Hope for the Future
After a year at the Residential Treatment Facility, Felix has made significant progress. He has experienced fewer violent outbursts and is learning healthier ways to cope with his anger and stress. With major strides made in the case, Felix and his mother were recently allowed trial home visits. These visits are a major step towards reunification, and we couldn’t be happier for Felix and his family. After several difficult years navigating the child welfare system, the family is beginning to look toward a more hopeful, stable, and secure future together.
