Foster Care Month: It takes a community

May is National Foster Care Month
Every year, children are removed from their homes and placed into foster care. Each has experienced some form of abuse, neglect, or both, that led to their entry into care. Their stories are often complex and their trauma is sometimes unimaginable.
According to the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS), as of May 1, 2026, here in Fairfax County:
- 257 children were in foster care
- 28% of children in foster care were under the age of five
- The average time a child spent in care was 22.15 months
It Takes a Community
Behind every child in care is a network of compassionate individuals – from foster parents and relatives to professionals and CASA volunteers – each playing a vital role in the life of an at-risk child.
By opening their homes to children in need of a temporary, safe placement, foster parents and kinship caregivers provide children with an opportunity to heal, grow, and thrive in a safe environment while families of origin work toward a more stable future.
By remaining a constant presence, CASA volunteers ensure no child has to navigate an uncertain journey alone. As advocates, they help ensure each child’s best interests remain a priority in court and beyond.
Meaningful change doesn’t happen on its own—it takes compassionate people willing to step forward and move the needle for vulnerable children. This Foster Care Month, we honor those who go above and beyond to support children in our community and help create brighter futures. We see you, we appreciate you, and we are grateful for all that you do for our children.
Thank you for showing up, speaking up, and making a difference in the lives of children and families across Fairfax County.
