Success Story

In January 2024, Fairfax CASA was assigned a critical case involving a three-year-old boy who was potentially facing physical abuse amid his mother’s untreated mental health issues. Swift action was taken as the child was relocated to his maternal grandmother’s care for safety. In her inaugural week on the case, the dedicated CASA unearthed a distressing truth – the child’s mother was a victim of physical abuse by relatives she resided with. Without hesitation, the CASA sprang into action, orchestrating emergency shelter arrangements for the distraught mother through relentless coordination with DFS specialists and her supervisor.
Tragically, the unexpected passing of the child’s mother months later brought profound sorrow to the family. Demonstrating unwavering grace and empathy, the CASA stood firmly by the child and grandmother during this trying period. She ensured the child’s well-being remained a top priority while offering solace and support to the grieving family. Throughout the arduous journey of the case, the CASA persistently advocated for essential resources, notably securing childcare funding to alleviate the financial strain on the grandmother. When a lapse in childcare funding left the grandmother burdened with a hefty bill, exceeding $900, the CASA diligently engaged with daycare providers, DFS, and her supervisor to find a viable solution. Her relentless efforts bore fruit when, a few weeks post-hearing, the child was joyously back in daycare, fostering a semblance of normalcy in the wake of tragedy.
